Starsound Studios just installed a Dolby Atmos Mixing Studio. Haverstick Designs was our acoustical design team. One very important person in the Atmos room was Paul Capuano from Dolby. He provided the final room tuning for our certification. Dolby Atmos has been around for many years in the film industry. However, it has yet to become a standard in the audio industry. It is a format of speakers surrounding the listener and identified as numbers such as 7.1. The first number represents the number of speakers around the listener. The second represents a subwoofer.

Typical numbering systems for Atmos include adding a third number, such as 7.1.4. The third number represents height speakers. For example, Starsound Studios installed a 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos system. 9.1.4 means we have nine speakers around the listening position, providing the low end is our one subwoofer, and finally our four height speakers. The height speakers make the Dolby Atmos system different from surround sound.
