It Takes Time |How To Prepare For A Recording Session | Studio 101
It takes time—way more time than you think. I have clients call the studio all the time, looking for 3 hours. National touring artists do not go into the studio, and 3 hours have the hit you hear on the radio. Here are the facts. Whatever your estimate is, multiply it by three.
First, there must be some session set up. All the recording instruments must be set up, tuned, and miced up. Instrument sounds keep getting adjusted accordingly to the song. The engineer must adjust the pre-amps for all of the instrumentation. So for argument's sake, let us say that it takes two hours. Secondly, all of the trackings, overdubbing, and recording of the song must occur. Let us say that it takes two hours. Next comes editing. You want your song's timing perfected, do you not? Of course. That will take another hour or two. It takes time.
It Takes Time. How Long Is This Going To Take?
It takes time. Now the engineer must mix and master the song. The song must be radio-competitive. So the time it takes an engineer to mix and master a song can vary. It takes me from importing raw files, or after a band records their music, about three or four hours if I am uninterrupted. So it may be in your best interest to let the engineer mix and master the song by himself. So you see that it takes time—more than the initial call of three hours. I stated earlier to multiply that initial ask by three. The total would be nine hours, three hours times three.
Now we add my estimations. Two hours set up plus recording for two hours is four hours. Add that four hours to the editing, bringing our total to six hours. Lastly, add the engineers three to four hours to mix and master, and you have 9 hours at the minimum. That amount of time is the initial three hours asked for times three. It takes time. At Starsound Studios, we have a ten-hour minimum in all of our studios for this reason.
No Place For Creativity: How To Prepare For Recording: Studio Session
No Place For Creativity? What do you mean? We are so glad you asked. If you are spending your money on an expensive recording, you want it to come out right, don't you? So it would help if you came into a commercial recording studio after super preparation at home. It is no place for creativity.
You want to be able to play the song so well that if you fell in the parking lot entering the building, you can crawl in bleeding and head aching and still play it like a champion. Think about that statement and what it means to you. How long would you have to practice to do that? It means a whole lot of practice and effort to play flawlessly to me. If you come to a studio after preparing like that, it will sound like it. If you go to the studio to be creative and wing it, the listener will hear it had no plan. I realize this takes all of the fun out of playing, and you think it is boring. However, your record won't sound boring. You can count on it.
If The Studio Is No Place For Creativity, Now What?
If you are going into the studio to record a song, play only that song for weeks prior. Then go into the studio. I know it isn't enjoyable. The recording lasts forever. Make that moment stand out! The studio is no place for creativity. The creativity happens at home, not in the studio. You are at the studio to work a plan, not make things up out of thin air.
The studio is no place for creativity. You can make time in your studio budget for experimenting. After accomplishing the goal, the band should do your experimentation, and the track and the tracking go well. Schedule Twelve hours. Work your plan in the first ten. Get the recording, mixing, and mastering perfect. Now use the last two hours for experimentation. Maybe you catch lightning in a bottle. Going into the studio, hoping to find electricity, only gets you burned! Now, do you see that the recording studio is no place for creativity? The creativity is in working out the song at home.
Record Yourself | How To Prepare For A Recording Session | Studio 101
Record Yourself? I know that is why you are coming to the studio. So what gives? We are happy you asked. Record yourself on your cell phone. Put your phone at the other end of the room and record the group or yourself. Evaluate that sound, energy, and performance. Think about how good it will sound at the studio if you can make that sound pretty good.
Make adjustments. Turn things down. Listen to each other musically to help make the phone recording sound good. Please don't make it about ego. If you are too loud on the phone, you most likely are too loud everywhere you play. This kind of evaluation can be nerve-racking. However, it can also be a fantastic tool to further your band's live sound as well.
Record Yourself To Know What You Sound Like
Record yourself so you will already know what an audio engineer at a commercial recording studio might suggest for you to do. For example, the engineer might recommend turning up or down. They also might ask you to change the sound of your instrument so it blends better with the whole band. Capture what you want to sound like from the beginning. That is the engineer's job. The engineer is not on anyone's side. They are on the side of what volume level seems good coming out of the control room speakers. Isn't that what you should be a fan of also? Make it easy on them by already knowing what you sound like beforehand.
Record yourself and evaluate the result with no ego or agenda other than the betterment of the band. The recording studio session will be what you want to hear out of the recording. It will sound good because the playing and the blending of the talent will be as well.
Headphones - How Do you Prepare for a Recording Session | Studio 101
Headphones. How To Prepare For A Studio Recording Session Studio 101. Are you going into a recording studio or need help at home? How to prepare for a studio recording session is your solution. I hear from clients in my studio that they cannot hear very well while playing with headphones. That is not the truth. They are just not used to how their instrument sounds in a headphone. This problem happens because of the way they practice. Let's use a guitar player as an example. A guitarist has ten or twelve-inch speakers in their rig and up to eight speakers in a full-stack. The earth trembles and the house shakes. Life is fantastic!
Now you enter a studio. They hand you a headphone with a three-inch speaker in them. You were practicing with eight twelve-inch speakers. Do you see the problem now? You have to practice in the environment you are entering. A studio does not have the earth trembling and the house shaking.
Headphones. A problem? What is the solution?
Practice with headphones. Most amps have a feature on them to listen with headphones. I know it is not sexy. However, it will be helpful. There are distributors to have multiple headphones plugged in at once if you are a band. Now you have to blend that by turning down and listening to one another. You will get used to hearing your part in a smaller, more reduced fashion. When you are entirely comfortable, now book your studio time.
Most studios have multiple channel mixers that you plug headphones into for listening. Now you have various channels to bring up or down in your headphones instead of just one send at home. Instead of saying you can't hear yourself, you will be saying it is fantastic! Your recording will reflect that.
Instrument Maintenance: How to Prepare a Recording Session: Studio 101
Instrument Maintenance isn't the sexiest topic. But, you know when you will go into a recording session. The planning is usually in advance. Instrument maintenance should be just as essential as the song you are recording. It is a time killer in the studio. The list can include, but not be limited to, guitar strings, bass strings, jacks on the guitars, instrument cables, drum hardware, drum nuts & bolts, drum heads, tuning, and more. Let's look at them one at a time because it is that important.
Instrument maintenance on guitars. You must have the intonation on your guitar or bass evaluated. Or do it yourself if you have the know-how. The main tuning may be correct, but other guitar or bass neck places may not be in tune. Instrument tuning is critical for a recording. Strings are another vital part of the sound of your instrument. Change them. Not at the studio, but days before going to the studio. Give them and your guitar a chance to settle in.
Instrument Maintenance - What is Next?
The subsequent adjustment should be tightening the input jacks. Nothing kills a take more than your instrument dropping out when you move. Also, check your cables. The improper signal can degrade your sound. Instrument maintenance can save your recording.
Instrument maintenance on drums. You don't notice little rattles until placing thirteen microphones on a drum kit. Then, go over every nut and bolt to ensure there are no rattles. That is an extreme time killer in the studio, and tracking it down is problematic because it is not always apparent which drum is causing the issue.
Just like guitar strings, change your drum heads. If you tend to play in a particular key, tune your kick, snare, and toms to notes within that key. That will help bring an extra dimension to the sound of the band. We all think to tune guitar but rarely think of the tone of drums. Just taking that spare time to tune, plus lube all the nuts and bolts, will help.
Instrument maintenance is instrumental in your success in the recording studio. I couldn't resist!
Click Track | How To Prepare For A Recording Session | Studio 101
Use A Click Track. How to prepare for a recording session. Are you going into a recording studio or need help at home? A click track is your solution. Most musicians entering a recording studio request not to have a click track. However, they still want their song edited. These do not go together. The problem is simple. No lines on graph paper.
Take yourself back to middle school math. The teacher asks you to plot the coordinates (5,12). Easy, count over on the X-axis 5 graph lines and up the Y-axis 12 graph lines. Now do the same thing with no lines on the graph paper. That task is impossible. There is no reference to making a graph. Yet, that is what you are asking an audio engineer to try to do. They cannot move the already tracked instruments forward or backward in time with no reference point to guide them. We are here to help you solve that problem.
Solution To The Dreaded Click Track Problem
Get an app for your smartphone that has a click track function. Play your song to beats per minute set on the app. The beats per minute are also known as BPM. Keep changing the BPM on the app until it feels comfortable to stay with while you are playing. Practice to that BPM until it is down pat. If you are in a band, give that BPM tempo to everyone else to practice on their own. Now get together and keep time with that BPM during practice. Keep making adjustments until everyone is comfortable. When you follow that pace repeatedly without fail, you are ready to go in and record.
Go to the studio session and tell the engineer to set the click track to your specific BPM. Watch their face light up. Ah, lines on the graph paper!

Mastering With The Black Box
We are focusing our Blog post is on Mastering with the Black Box (HG-2). The Black Box (HG-2) adds weight and dimension to a mix by adding harmonic distortion. So if you are looking for that warmth and depth to your mix, the Black Box Analog (HG-2) is your answer.
The unique signal path is how mastering the Black Box (HG-2) gives the mix analog goodness:
The audio hits the input transformer.
It can move in 2 directions to the Pentode tube circuit and the Parallel Saturation tube circuit back to the Pentode. This circuit will enable us to add parallel compression.
It moves to the Triode tube circuit and hits the passive output attenuator.
It reaches the output transformer.
The features do not end there. It has a Saturation Frequency selector. The frequency selector allows you to manipulate the frequency of the material. In flat mode, it affects the entire signal. The low position changes the low-end sound of the content, and the same with the high position switch touching just the highs.
Mastering with the Black Box Analog (HG-2) also gives you an air boost and alt. tubes. The “air” boost is a gentle high-frequency lift that starts at 10khz and gently rises to 20kHz—the boost inserts in the main signal path at the Triode gain stage. The “Alt tube” selector lets you choose between two sets of 12AX7 tubes in the parallel saturation mode. The “alt” tube is a little more aggressive. The alt. path gives you a full range of tones and saturation types.
Mastering With The Black Box (HG-2) And Its Power
The power of mastering the Black Box (HG-2) is in the way it transforms your mix into a radio-worthy product without having to be a rocket scientist to use it. Using the Black Box at Starsound Studios is the last stop in our mastering chain. We have put it through its paces to find the perfect setting to create the sound of our studio. Then, use it in many different ways. We highly recommend mastering using the Black Box (HG-2) to upgrade your master recordings to a whole new place.
Analog-Digital Hybrid Recording
What exactly is analog-digital hybrid recording? The Analog-digital hybrid recording is a way in which a recording studio can utilize the best of both analog and digital to record music. In this blog, we will show you how Starsound Studios uses the technique of analog-digital hybrid recording to provide a “sound.”
Our routing in the studio is as follows. First, the microphones on each object enter the Audient analog preamps. Secondly, the signal comes out of the preamp into two separate dBX analog 500 modules that are a compressor and equalizer. Last, that signal chain enters the A/D converter of Pro-Tools. Once inside Pro-Tools, the signal is now in the digital world.
At that point, working on the signal is a simple process. The audio convert to binary ones and zeros in the computer. An engineer can apply digital processing to the ones and zeros within the machine with ease. Starsound Studios takes the analog-digital hybrid recording one step further.
We combine like things within the mix and send them out 16 channels to a Dangerous Music 2 BUS LT analog summing box. The 16 channels are as follows. First, are the four mono channels consisting of Kick, Snare, Bass, and lead vocals. Next, are the remaining six stereo channels. First are all of the toms. Second are the cymbals, which include the hi-hat, ride, and overhead microphones. Next are all of the guitar tracks. Fourth are all of the keyboard tracks, Fifth is the background vocals. Lastly, are all of the background vocals. The analog summing is the first stop in the analog-digital hybrid recording chain.
Analog-Digital Hybrid Recording - Take It One Step Further
After the analog summing process with the 2 BUS LT, come our 6 Rupert Neve analog 500 modules. The modules are aligned as follows. First are the two equalizers and the compressors follow. Lastly are the tape emulators. The last stop on the analog chain is the Analog Designs Black Box. Each of these analog pieces of gear adds weight and girth we can hear from analog equipment. The analog-digital hybrid recording result is then brought back into Pro-Tools.
There is a trick to adding further digital processing to that analog result when bringing the analog signal back into Pro-Tools. The method is to get it back on a stereo AUX track. The reason is that Pro-Tools cannot record plugins on the same channel. Therefore, if the analog result from the last paragraph comes in on an AUX track, it can record additional plugins added to the AUX track. It is done by bussing the AUX to a stereo audio track. Recording the audio track will combine the analog and digital. The recording of the incoming analog with plugins is the last step in the analog-digital hybrid recording route.
The result of recording in this fashion gives you the ability to use analog and digital to your advantage. So give it a try in your audio recordings. Stop by Starsound Studios and enjoy the analog-digital hybrid recording journey.
Guitar | Tone How To | Home Recording | DynaMount
The DynaMount Remote Microphone Positioner is an excellent tool for recording guitar tones at a home recording studio. Everyone is chasing a particular guitar tone. So why not use a tool that will allow you to dial in the exact guitar tone you want while recording at home?
The DynaMount is a robotic microphone system that you can control via WiFi with an iPad, phone, or CPU. The concept is straightforward. A human cannot remember what something sounds like for more than a few seconds. Walking back and forth from your amp to a typical mixing set-up takes longer than your aural memory. So how can you tell if your guitar tone changes were better or worse? You can’t.
How To Set Up The DynaMount
DynaMount to the rescue! Set the DynaMount in the center of the dust cap on the speaker cabinet and center the unit itself. This location gives you the movement to both sides. Also, set the DynaMount to the center of the platform so you can move forward and backward about the grill of the guitar cabinet. Now you are ready to experiment.
Dial the exact tone you are looking for in the room where your cabinet is. When you have achieved the guitar tone, you are looking for, you move into the mixing position. While the guitarist is playing, move the microphone on the DynaMount until you hear the exact tone you are looking for coming from your monitor speakers.
The Last Thing To Consider
It has now provided you with the exact guitar tone you are looking to achieve. What is left? Good question, thank you for asking. Now you have to blend your second guitarist. Remember, guitars take up the same space in the mix. If they are relatively the same tone-wise, they will mask each other, and your mix will suffer.
So once you have followed the previous directions for both guitarists, you have to blend them into one unit. Use the DynaMount to make one guitar a little higher in tone and the other a little lower in tone by moving the microphone. Each guitarist's tone will suffer slightly. However, the overall tone of the recording will sound much fuller.
Dynamount Remote Microphone Mount
The Dynamount remote microphone mount is the perfect solution for dialing great sound. For this blog, we will focus on dialing a guitar sound. However, you can use the Dynamount remote microphone mount for many other recording situations in the studio. So, how can the Dynamount remote microphone mount help you achieve a guitar sound? First, you must get the guitar sound you desire by manipulating the guitar head’s parameters to sound how you want it to in the room. We do this with the amp at a very high volume. The tubes warm and drive the cabinet. Secondly, we have the guitarist enter the control room. A very long cable is needed. The sound coming from the control room speakers must match the live room—the Dynamount remote microphone mount bursts into action.
Next, use the App on your tablet to move the microphone in the live room from where you sit in the control room. Imagine you can now sit in the sweet spot and control what the guitar sounds like in the control room. The purpose is to match the sound in the live room with the guitar sound coming from the control room speakers. Lastly, you are ready to record. The trick is to capture your album sound when recording. There are treatment steps during mixing and mastering that will alter the original sound of the cabinet. However, the closer you dial in the tone with the Dynamount remote microphone mount, you will do less work in the mix to get the album sound you desire.
Check out the Dynamount remote microphone mount today, or you can visit us at Starsound Studios, and we will take care of it for you. Until next time.

Recording Vocals
Recording vocals are our specialty at Starsound Studios. Any vocal recording must have great care taken in the choice of microphones and pre-amps. Capturing the right sound is paramount. Recording vocals is a very intimate situation. We take pride in providing a vocal artist with the best listening environment, a comfortable vibe, and a spacious booth with all the accessories needed.
There are three critical factors to consider when recording vocals. First is the microphone. At Starsound Studios, we have the Neumann TLM-49. The design of the Neuman microphone is specifically for recording vocals. It is not used on any other instrument and never leaves our vocal booth.
The second critical factor is the pre-amp. We use the Universal Audio LA-610. It also has a compressor built in it. Not only is it an outstanding pre-amp, but it allows us to kiss the top transients to smooth out a vocal performance before any processing inside the computer. The last critical factor is an excellent converter. Finally, we have high-definition audio converters. Combining these three will ensure that your next vocal recording will be professional.
Recording Vocals Mix Position
You will have your vocal mixer at your fingertips. This way, you can control what you wish to hear and how loud. We have Focal headphones that have outstanding sonic quality. Good quality headphones will make any vocal recording a success! When you can monitor yourself correctly, you can more easily achieve an excellent take.
We take great pride in processing vocals so that they have all the effects they need without sounding that way. In the songs we record, there is a lot of processing. However, in the context of the rest of the mix, the vocals sound natural. The sound is warm and inviting. We believe that effects should not be overwhelming and that you should be the star - not the effects! See why we make the difference.
Recording Studio In Ohio That Specializes In Recording Guitars
Starsound Studios is a Cleveland, Ohio recording studio that specializes in recording guitars. We record two microphones off of the cabinet plus a direct channel right from the guitar. This way, we can manipulate that direct signal through re-amping, amp modeling, or add live or modeled pedals to the guitar signal. The three guitar signals recording at the same time makes us a top recording studio Ohio choice.
One of the microphones on the cabinet uses the Dynamount, it is a moving platform for a mic. The moving platform allows us to move the mic across the guitar speaker cabinet. The Dynamount also will enable us to move that microphone in and out and side to side. The movement of the microphone side to side gives off-axis recording opportunities. The moving platform is a big reason Starsound Studios is the only choice when choosing a recording studio Ohio.
What makes the moving platform even more useful is the fact that an iPad controls it. What the iPad control allows us to do is have the guitarist play in the control room. We first get the guitar sound from our Mesa Boogie or Marshall guitar rigs. We listen to how the cabinet sounds in the room. When the guitarist likes the guitar sound in the room, we then proceed to the control room. We play in the control room and continue to move the microphone along the guitar cabinet until the sound of the room is coming out of the control room speakers.
Recording Studio Ohio - The Most Critical Step
The most critical step when recording is capturing the sound you hear in the room. The Dynamount X1-R is the perfect tool for that. Without it, we would have to run back and forth and may lose the original sound by changing the microphones manually. We can stay in the control room and operate the mic from there. How cool is that?
When recording guitars at Starsound Studios, we are the only choice when selecting a recording studio Ohio.
Recording Studio Cleveland Ohio
Starsound Studios is the best recording studio in Cleveland, Ohio. There are several factors in choosing a recording studio. We will show you five reasons to choose Starsound Studios. First is setting proper levels. The second reason is capturing the sound in the room, and making sure it is translating through the monitors in the control room. The fourth reason is artist comfort. The last goal is to have fun darn it!
Starsound Studios is the best recording studio Cleveland Ohio because we understand how to set level. We receive so many songs to mix where the tracks clip the first plugin on it. Clipping is no good. Where do you go from there? We then have to trim each track to grow the mix from that point. Never set an audio level that gives you no room to grow. Set it reasonably to start your mix from that keeps your faders at or around 0dB and no more.
Capturing the sound in the live room is the second key. Listen to the instrument in question within the space. Record a section and listen back. Does the instrument sound coming from the control room monitors sound the same? If not, move the microphone. Repeat these steps until it is the same. You are not finished. Then listen to the two guitars or the kick drum and bass guitar. Are they fighting each other sonically? If so, then carving the original sound to your DAW will save headaches on the mixing side. Starsound Studios is the best recording studio in Cleveland because we capture the live room sound and make adjustments before actually recording the song. The results speak for themselves.
Recording Studio Cleveland Ohio - Comfort
The last two factors are artist comfort and have fun darn it! Every studio has sofas, refrigerators, cold and hot drinking water, microwaves, etc. What the average studio does not do is spend time with their clients. Please get to know them. Talk with them. When you have a relationship with them, any suggestion or retake is not looked upon with disdain. You become a valued member of their team. The last advice is to keep it light and have fun. Get them laughing and joke around. I own my studio and my heart pounds when the record light is on. Do you think theirs is? I'm just saying.
Starsound Studios is the best recording studio in Cleveland, Ohio, for these reasons and more. Please give us a call and see why today.

Recording audio in Cleveland, Ohio, at Starsound Studios, is the best choice. Microphones. Which one do you choose to record your next project? Which is the best? How do you get that sound? We are here to help you with these answers and much more.
Starsound Studios is the best recording studio in Cleveland, Ohio, because we know how to achieve that sound using the microphone's polar pattern to our advantage. When getting drums to sound good, there is a lot of bleed between microphones. One way to combat this is by using the microphone's polar pattern to your advantage. Take your snare microphone and face the back of it toward the Hi-hat. Use the polar pattern to your advantage.
A cardioid microphone rejects sound from the back. Face the back end of it to the source of the bleed problem, and it will help a whole lot. You will never wholly eliminate bleed. The idea is to minimize it to an acceptable level. This is why recording audio in Cleveland, Ohio, at Starsound Studios, is a wise choice.
Recording Audio In Cleveland Ohio - Which Is The Best?
Here at Starsound Studios, we are asked which microphone is the best. I usually respond by asking which crayon in the box is the better crayon to color with? When decorating something blue, the blue one is the best. A blue coloring crayon is not the best choice when drawing a fire engine. Microphones are the same as the crayon analogy, each has its own color. The idea is to know ahead of time which color is needed and why. This is another reason why recording audio in Cleveland, Ohio, at Starsound Studio, is the best option.
